Mit Cellosonate wird normalerweise a Komposition vor dem Cello und Klavier beabsichtigt, obwohl es auch Cellosonaten für Cello gibt Solo oder für Cello mit einem anderen Instrument. Die berühmtesten Cellosonaten der Romantik wurden geschrieben von Johannes Brahms und Ludwig van Beethoven. Die ersten Cellosonaten wurden geschrieben von Barocke Komponisten wenn Francesco Geminiani und Antonio Vivaldic.
