Das Rüsseltier oder Elefant (Proboscidea) sind die Ordnung von Säugetiere zu was Mastodons, Mammuts und Elefanten gehören. Sie sind am engsten mit der Seekühe und der Rock-Krawatten. Insgesamt sind etwa 150 Arten bekannt.

Die Bestellung kommt von Afrika und hat eine lange und bewegte Geschichte. Die meisten Vertreter sind jedoch ausgestorben, obwohl dies bei einigen Arten erst vor kurzem (Ende des letzten Eiszeit oder später) passiert. Eritherium von spätPaläozän ist das älteste bekannte, kleinste und primitivste Rüsseltier.
