Der Name einer Ära basiert auf den dominantesten Spielkonsolentyp aus dieser Ära, obwohl nicht alle Spielkonsolen einer Ära vom gleichen Typ sind. Ebenfalls in dieser Liste enthalten sind die tragbare Spielkonsolen, die im Allgemeinen weniger Leistung haben als die Heimspielkonsolen der gleichen Ära.
